Frequently asked questions

Do you build to the actual UL listing, or just use fire-rated board? +

To the listing. A fire rating is a tested assembly, not a product. It takes the right board type and number of layers, the specified framing and fastener schedule, and firestopping at every penetration, all matching a published UL detail. Type X board in the wrong configuration does not produce a rated wall, and an inspector knows the difference. We build the assembly the rating schedule calls for.

What is the difference between Type X and Type C drywall? +

Both are fire-rated gypsum board, but Type C has additives that hold up better at high temperature and less shrinkage, and certain listed assemblies require it, especially higher ratings and some shaft-wall and ceiling details. We use whichever board the listed assembly for your specific wall specifies, not whichever is on the truck.

What does a shaft wall involve, and when do I need one? +
