Impact- and abuse-resistant board is the default here, not the upgrade
A school corridor sees carts, backpacks, lockers, gurneys of AV gear, and a few hundred teenagers a period. Standard half-inch gypsum does not survive that. Education drawings specify abuse-resistant and impact-resistant board rated to ASTM C1629 (National Gypsum Hi-Abuse and Hi-Impact, CertainTeed Extreme Abuse and Impact, USG abuse-resistant) through corridors, stairwells, cafeterias, gymnasium walls, and any wall below wainscot height in a high-traffic zone. Reading the spec and installing the rated board at the level the architect called for, instead of substituting standard board to shave material cost, is the difference between a wall that lasts a decade and a patch order every fall. In a dormitory or residence hall, the same logic applies to common areas, stairwells, and laundry and trash rooms.
Acoustic separation between classrooms is a code issue, not a comfort feature
Classrooms have to be quiet enough to learn in. That means real sound-rated partitions between rooms, not a single layer of board on a stud. The reference standard is ANSI/ASA S12.60, which sets background-noise and reverberation targets for learning spaces, and the drawings translate it into partition assemblies with a specified STC rating: often a second layer of board, resilient channel or sound-rated framing, acoustic sealant at the perimeter, and insulation in the cavity, carried tight to the deck rather than dying above the ceiling grid. The occupancy class changes room to room, and so do the fire-rated assemblies
A school is not one occupancy. K–12 space is Educational (E), college and university instruction above the twelfth grade is Business (B), auditoriums and gyms and cafeterias are Assembly (A-3), and residence halls and dormitories are Residential (R-2). Each carries its own corridor-rating, exit-enclosure, and separation requirements under the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code and the IBC.
